How Far is Lion Rock from the Neon Lights

Hong Kong has long been portrayed as a glamorous and prosperous capitalist city, and the ‘Lion Rock Spirit’ celebrated as an ideal, a construct shared and instilled among generations. Beneath the veil of prosperity, yet, urban lives remain difficult, and the everyday struggles are only made visible the backdrop of neon lights. Hollowing out the values of the ‘Lion Rock Spirit’, some choose ignorance and indifference to a moral and a system degrading and failing. While some choose amid the urban grounds to reclaim the spirit once lived up in the city. Between the Lion Rock and the neon lights, between the utopian construct and the dystopian frustration, there are ashes or dust.

This exhibit attempts to capture and portray such absurdity and juxtaposition of the celebrated utopia construct and the everyday lived struggles. It calls for reflection by both the city professionals and the community on our current position, and more importantly, on the common way forward. In the coming decades, what will be our ‘Lion Rock Spirit’?
