THE MILLS
THEi Product Design programme recognizes the rich history of Tsuen Wan’s culture and industrial design. Titled as “Museum of Tomorrow”, the exhibit will showcase a selected work from THEi PD students, featuring what young people today think are the core values and collective memory of Hong Kong through everyday objects.
Students have researched about the economic vitality of Hong Kong from the period of 1950’s to 1990’s as a historical background, studied the quintessential Hong Kong industrial designs from that period and selected the most iconic ones, such as Dim Sum steamers, tin toys, and yellow rubber ducks. The installation aims to make our citizens more aware that a city’s future is grounded on a solid foundation of intensive invention, creation and production. The designed objects might be mundane items, but it is exactly through these everyday products that we call for serenity, purity, and empathy, in order to build the design thinking for tomorrow.
“The Museum of Tomorrow” mixes a short video documentation of the urban fabric and people in Tsuen Wan and an installation by THEi Product Design students. It is aspired to create more discussions and debates on how everyday designs motivate a city.
