  • THE MILLS

The spatial layout of the city exerts a powerful influence on human behaviour. The way we move and transact is directly influenced by how places connect.

Space integrates (red, orange then yellow) or segregates (green then blue); brings people into social and economic relationships or keeps them apart; helps us move effectively or consigns us to carbon-intensive lifestyles; enhances property values or damages investments.

As we journey through the city, the streets we use are more or less vibrant. If we understand space we can control our interactions. But space plays tricks: some streets are important for local journeys but not for longer ones, and vice versa. Others stay important at every scale.

Space Syntax provides a science-based and human-focused approach to the analysis and design of cities, helping people see, in straightforward terms, how urban places can be designed to optimise their functional performance.
