Facade of Resilience // Prototype

One of the core values of Hong Kong People is that we are very capable to “adapt and dedicate” [靈活變通,自強不息]. We never let our physical shortcomings limit ourselves, we turn constraints into opportunities. This installation is an experiment of how we turn such admirable Hong Kong Spirit and Identity into a design concept. Could space also adapt and respond to the environments; interact with people to bring a more harmonious atmosphere for them to live in?

The installation prototype is a responsive kinetic prototype. The system will react with a set of preset parameters; for instance, the detection of movement or sound would be a stimulus, and they will trigger a series of motions as output. The fabric panels are instructed through a program to an extent and retract the hydraulic arms accordingly. This animated structure comes to life celebrating various human interactions and would bring a sense of playfulness to the seemingly static built space. The sound from the movements of the mechanical parts; light and shadow drawings from the fabric positions; together they form a dynamic and sensational experience to people nearby.

A building does not necessarily be static and passive; with the right tools and systems, it could actively engage with the people and the environment. It could react and respond to different needs and situations, help to improve the quality of our future life. If the building facade could be responsive to stimulus, including  sun positions, temperature difference, and occupation density, the system will then parametrically calculate and respond by providing necessary shading, enhanced ventilation for the enclosure, making the interior space more pleasant for users. The imagination of a responsive smart mechanism will explore the possibility of a better, more sustainable and fun lifestyle in the future. It is a vision of how our buildings could be in our future.
