LAAB Architects

LAAB is a laboratory for Art and Architecture dedicated to spatial innovations that are firmly rooted in the community, cultural, and environmental contexts. We design public space, visionary architecture, transformative interiors, and art installation.

Our collective of architects, designers, engineers, makers, and sociologists work together with forward-thinking clients and collaborators to bring visionary designs to life. While sustainable community development has been a salient aspect of our projects, in 2018, we started the CommunityLAAB initiative to engage the public in more direct and explicit ways through organizing community projects.

Based in Hong Kong, LAAB’s work has reached various global design communities, with recognition from the American Institute of Architects International Region Design Award, the Japan Good Design Award Best 100, and the Best Craftsmanship by the Netherland FRAME Award.

The LAST SAWMILL

  • THE MILLS

“The Last Sawmill” is a one-year social campaign that tells the story of Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber Factory—the last sawmill factory standing in Hong Kong—before its eviction and potential shut down in 2021 in the face of the North East New Territories Development Plans.

This exhibition is a partial documentation of the space and history of Chi Kee, through the eyes of architects and sociologists from LAAB Architects, who have benefited from Master Wong’s teaching and craftsmanship when they collaborated in the T · CAFE project back in 2014 to transform fender wood collected from the demolished Wan Chai Pier into bespoke furniture.

Through this exhibition, LAAB hopes to raise the city’s awareness of Chi Kee’s contribution to local craftsmanship and open up the discussion to preserve the factory as an industrial heritage.
